Noah's yochien yearbook

The week of Branden's and Noah's elementary school undokai, I was given Noah's yochien yearbook while at swim school. Remember how there were 2 teams/clubs. One team was the graduation party/shaon kai team/committee (I was on that one) and the other team was yearbook. Up until now us shaon kai members have been waiting for the yearbook to be made. The mother's of the yearbook committee actually finished it, but had waited to push the order through until they could capture their graduation photos for the yearbook and then it would take many months for the yearbook maker to make the yearbooks but all the tough and hard work the mom's did. This is what Noah's outside cover looks like for his yearbook this is what the actual yearbook sits in/is placed in.

You open it up and this is on the first page. A collage of every one's face. A very good picture of Noah on the bottom left side of the page wearing his winter vest and white shirt underneath. There are also a few more of him in this collage and I see his yochien best friend H. And many of his friends.

A real picture from the actual (very private) graduation from upstairs, so private in fact, that no pictures were allowed to be taken by any of us, except this one from the school photographer they hire for all the events. No siblings invited, no extended family invited, just mother and father only allowed. And no cameras or video cameras allowed to be used upstairs during the graduation ceremony (though I did have one in my purse but I didn't dare open my purse at all while upstairs.) The shaon kai/party pics were allowed of course. and after graduation pics downstairs were allowed but nothing during the actual real ceremony allowed, so I am glad I can share this picture with you. Also notice everyone was given a flower pinned to their jackets on graduation day. This is a private Catholic yochien, so they were indeed praying at the start which is what Noah and the rest of his classmates were doing in this picture.

Only 9 yellow badges. Look at the 2 crying at the far right! Noah and a little girl. Oh my dear sweet baby! It's okay...no need to cry. Noah was very afraid being on the stage with so many people in the crowd watching. But, I understood that it was quite scary being on that stage only being 3 years old. Best friend H 3rd from the left doing an Ultra Man pose, not scared or crying one bit, ha ha ha. They grew up to be besties, as you know. Yep, the crying boy who was very afraid of being on the stage (Noah) and the ultraman poser, ha ha ha. These are the memories that will be saved and waiting for you when you are all grown up Noah. And you can look back, see these pictures and smile.

Noah's first yochien undokai ever! And his first medal for sports day! By the way, Noah and the little boy in front of him, they swim together to this very day! He is very sweet and Noah and K are very good friends. And K's mom is very awesome too.

Pink badge!

Everything on these pages are from the pink badge years. And a few other pages as well. There are actually a few pages for the red badge years and a few for each year.

My my my, those tears from Noah's yellow badge years are long gone! Replaced by tons of smiles and laughs! Look at Noah in Summer as a pink badge playing and squirting some water. And yep best friend H in the pic up above with the red and blue rash guard. One thing I am super glad about is the bond these kids had to one another. From yellow and red badge all the way through pink and to blue. They got super tight/close!

And our bittersweet year! Noah's final year. His blue badge year. Nencho year! The year I was busy as all heck with my shaon kai stuff and all that. But it was honestly really worth it.  No regrets at all. So many great memories Noah has from this school. Me too.

This picture was taken during Noah's overnight stay. The Yayoi sensei and everyone said Noah should be Peter Pan! So Noah was Peter Pan. Captain Hook was in another picture, ha ha ha. And K was Aladdin.

I was also glad someone in the yearbook committee put the picture of Noah giving a speech in the yearbook. I was really happy they put it in the yochien yearbook.

And the final page. All the kids are balloons. They are soaring! But needing to be let go and set free. : ( The Yayoi sensei is holding half and the encho-sensei who retired was holding that side of balloons/kids. And they were about to let go and let them soar! And time to move on. The words say, "Habatake oozorae" Which means basically...flying into the big sky. Meaning....they are letting you go...they are releasing you to go and soar and fly and do bigger and better things. They let go.....Please don't laugh at me, but when I got to this page, tears just fell. I got it. I so totally got this! I am so glad the first time I opened this was in my kitchen at the table when no one was home. Ha ha ha. : ) We had gotten home so late from swimming that we forgot to look at this and so I looked at this on Friday morning while the boys were at school. Noah was swimming Thursday's that month.

Last picture close-up, the ballon picture and they specifically asked to have each child write in their own handwriting their own first name. So that is indeed Noah's signature and the last picture the yochien will have of Noah. They let you go Noah....they let you go last March is when you graduated. So you could soar and fly into the big sky that is called life or in our case, elementary school. Ha ha ha. ; )

And the back of the book.  Anyway, I really think the "yearbook mom's" did a fantastic job with the yearbooks. I think Noah's yearbook came out really awesome. The way the yearbook started with the collage, all the pics in chronological order and then the balloon/kid release at the end.  Noboru looked at the yearbook really well, I looked at it twice really well. Branden went through it and compared it to his yochien yearbook because Branden has one also, Branden liked Noah's and he also really likes his too. Me too, I like both yearbooks. : ) And Noah went through it very slowly and pointed...and said, I remember this! And I remember that! : ) The second time I went through the yearbook, no tears at all. Just total happiness. Good memories and fun times for Noah and for all of us! Anyway, I just thought I would share with you, what a Japanese yochien yearbook here in Japan, can look like. This is what Noah's looks like. It will be an amazing keepsake throughout the years. : )  Onwards and upwards! And now Noah is busy creating new memories at a new school. And he's doing pretty good. : )

Trick or treat. Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat!

Anyone remember that old saying? : ) I remember in kindergarten some of the cheekier boys used to say that! Ha ha ha. Anyway....we will be taking the boys trick or treating this year! First time for Noah, second time for Branden. Needless to say, they are both super excited!

 

Branden has been trick or treating once when he was 3 years old. Noboru was in Japan working and Branden and I went to Denver to visit my family. The timing was perfect because we just happened to be in Denver at my dad’s house for about 4-5 weeks just to catch up with my extended family and stuff. Eat American food and as luck would have it, Branden got to spend his birthday there (Oct 26), he had a Nemo cake by the way and also got to spend Halloween there too. Anyway, sadly though I have pictures I took from an instant camera, this was before I had a digital camera. So though Branden has seen the pictures of himself. Wearing his costume before we left the house. And I have a few of us on the street about to trick or treat with his plastic pumpkin filled with candy however he has no/zero memory of doing so. I mean he knows he did trick or treat, because he’s seen the pictures but he has no memory of it at all. : ( He was a cute little Dalmatian by the way. Because we actually owned 2 Dalmatians.

 

Noah has never been trick or treating at all. And I feel really bad that he has never got the chance to experience the fun and magic of that.

 

When you live in a foreign country you sometimes give up your holidays if they aren’t celebrated there/here. Sure Japan likes Halloween, they are catching on, I see the decorations at the stores and mall and the Halloween packages of things here. But the concept of trick or treating really hasn’t caught on, at least not where we live. So we make our own holidays. The best we can and create traditions of our own in our own home. That’s why we always buy a pumpkin every year so they can enjoy the great fun of a pumpkin carve! I have vivid memories of being a little girl myself and my mom and dad and I would search for the “great pumpkin” every year we’d look for the biggest pumpkin we could find (they were dirt cheap in Colorado) and then my dad would carve it and I would get to pick the design and my mom would make the roasted pumpkin seeds, this was one of my favorite parts of the Halloween season was going to the pumpkin patch finding the perfect pumpkin for our family and then the pumpkin carve and seed roasting. Which is why I have always made it an every year event for Branden and Noah. I will also, usually buy a whole heap of mixed candy/chocolate, place it into a plastic pumpkin and let them eat it slowly and in bits throughout the month of October. We also make a point of taking Branden and Noah to one of the Disney’s for Halloween fun. So yeah we do...make our own traditions and we do pretty okay. We watch all the Halloween specials on TV and enjoy the Charlie Brown Halloween DVD we have. But one of the things I really wish is...I wish they could experience trick or treating for real at least one more time. And being this age....I’m sure they’d remember it this time. : ) And now I have a digital camera so I can hopefully take better pictures now.

 

So, anyway, you all know we’ve been gearing up for our Guam trip in October. We first thought about being there for Branden’s birthday. Or be there for October 31st and do trick or treating. We were on the fence and since it’s actually Branden’s birthday and not ours. We asked him. We said....”Okay your birthday is October 26th. Would you like to be in Guam for your actual birthday and we can get a cake and stuff just like Noah had in July. And that would be really fun. Or would you like to go to Guam a few days after your birthday and you can still have a birthday cake same as Noah had in July except it would be a couple days delayed *however* you would get the opportunity to go trick or treating” Noboru got a whole week off and of course we are not going to Guam for a whole week the cost for a whole week would be just too much (considering we have other things also planned for Fall also). However, we could pick 3 nights/ 4 days out of the week, sort of play around with the dates. And after we get the dates set.... Noboru will give his extra days off back that he doesn’t need.

 

Two weeks ago, Branden said at dinner, “you know I've thought about it and, I’d like to go trick or treating one more time.” We said, “done!” Noah is just thrilled because he’s never been trick or treating at all, unless you count at Disneyland/Sea. : ) We also mentioned to Branden he could have a Baskin Robbins cake here in Japan on his actual birthday or he can have a delayed cake but a birthday cake in Guam, he really wants a cake in Guam. ; ) So, anyway, that’s the plan.

 

Hotel is booked, rental car is booked. The extra days off, Noboru gave back already.

 

We have asked my dad the best places to trick or treat in Guam, he didn't know but he asked around at church and some of his neighbors at his condo complex. He got 2 names of areas we should go to.... recommended to him by his friends/church friends who take their kids/grandkids trick or treating there. And now....we’re just hoping they actually have some lights on houses and we have a good trick or treat turn out. *crosses fingers*  I hope there are many houses with lights on to trick or treat.  Anyway, that's what's quietly on the backburner right now....some trick or treat fun for Halloween!

Halloween cupcake fun! And our chicken cutlet dinner last night

Saturday morning, the four of us went for a walk/bike ride through our neighborhood. Noboru and I actually walked and the boys rode their bikes.

I see leaves that have started to fall onto the grass already. That make that Fall time, crunch crunch crunch sound went you step on the leaves. : ) Meanwhile, we are now coming around the bend and going down one of the hills and getting closer to our part/area of the housing community.  The Jinbei boy's house is very near here. Very nice wide sidewalk and a nice Fall day. It's a 20 minute walk around and I always feel better after doing one lap. Treadmill at home too of course, but a lap around the neighborhood is always nice and now that it's Fall the weather is perfect for outside walking. Saturday we just stayed home, relaxed we did go for a walk. But other then that, we watched TV and at night a DVD after we had supper and showers.

Sunday after the boys were finished playing with their friends from the neighborhood. We baked some cupcakes together. Halloween type cupcakes.

They also each made 1 special one. The one in the center is Noah's. He wanted to make a half and half cupcake. Meaning 2 different kinds of sprinkles. This was the very first cupcake he ate last night. I'm glad the boys enjoyed making these cupcakes with me. : )  Because I had a lot of fun too.

Last night's dinner. This is what everyone had, Noah's portion was a pinch smaller but Branden's was this size also, same as Noboru's and mine. Chicken cutlet/katsu, salad, macaroni salad, steamed broccoli and rice. Noboru, Branden and Noah had miso soup with this also. Tonight's dinner. Chicken chow mein/sara udon with those crispy noodles and lots of veggies and chicken. Tonight's also Kumon night.

First nabe of the season

Friday our family had our first nabe of the Fall season! One thing I really look forward to with living in Japan in the Fall and Winter..... is nabe season. I like that we all eat around the table in 1 communal pot cooking and simmering in the center and we all pull whatever we'd like to eat out of it. It's really fun and I know the kids love this! And so do Noboru and I. Our family favorite is the Cocoichibanya curry nabe, the flavor is yumm. It says on the package to use regular cabbage, which we add, we also add typical things you'd normally find in regular curry like potatoes, carrots and we like mushrooms also. I use chicken breasts and we also throw in chicken meatballs that are found everywhere at grocery stores this time of year. I had all of this prepped Friday in the day before I went to pick up Noah from school. And after we came home from swimming and us 4 were all home, we all closed the blinds and enjoyed supper.

As usual we always switch seats so the boys sit farthest from the pot. Just makes us feel safer. Noah watching daddy serve up something for himself.  Hmm what did he choose for his first serving? That's always fun to see. Noah's favorites are the chicken meatballs and the udon, we usually add udon noodles.

And as things disappeared from the pot we had more veggies and meat to add. As the pot went down. Dinner time is the perfect time to catch up, and enjoy time together as a family. We had leftovers and we saved it and had ojiya/ sort of like risotto from it for the next day for lunch. It was so good. Nice hot showers and into jammies everyone went and then pop 2 big bowls of popcorn and time to enjoy TV in the living room. Thank goodness for Fridays. : )  And today is Sunday...can't believe the whole week starts all over again tomorrow. Ha ha ha. Oh well, enjoying today and just staying home today for us all here.  Chicken cutlet/katsu for dinner tonight.

Homemade chocolate chip pecan cookies, Nexus 7 tablet, lunch date with my husband and a few other this and that's thrown in for good measure!

This picture was taken from last Monday. It was a holiday of sorts here in Japan, which is why Branden and Noah didn't have school last Monday.  Their friends came to our house first thing in the morning and they went out to play from about 9am-noon when the lunch bell rang throughout our town and neighborhood. They rode their bikes home via the ped/bike paths. And at noon, we had lunch (grilled cheese sandwich and that quick/instant Italian pasta cup of soup  by Knorr (Ajinomoto?) and I had the butter on the counter softening and after lunch we 3 made homemade chocolate chip cookies together. But first they took a pic with our Jack Pumpkin Head of 2012!

We could fit 22 cookies per tray at a time and we had 2 trays baking at the same time/together. So these got done pretty fast with baking around 44-45 cookies in 1 fell swoop. : )

Kumon was also closed last Monday. And so it was really just a "do nothing" type day. Day of leisure, relax or do what you want. We did bake the cookies already like I said. And dinner was very easy.  Chicken teriyaki. I baked 6 chicken leg quarters in the oven when they were nearly done I brushed on some teriyaki sauce on them. We had rice and steamed veggie/broccoli and macaroni salad. The boys and Noboru had miso soup with it also. So that was last Monday. Oh yeah the boys did go out and play after the cookies were done. They went riding bikes with friends for another hour. But when they came to check in, I told them we had to leave to pop over to the bakery to get some fresh baguettes for their obento on Tuesday.  The baguettes I bought on Saturday for the undokai, honestly would have been as stale as heck if we would have tried to keep them for Tuesdays obento....so we turned those into garlic bread as a snack Sunday afternoon. So we needed fresh ones.

No, this isn't mine! ; ) This is Noboru's. He was wanting to get a tablet. Considered getting an ipad, but when he heard talks online about this coming he held off and waited for this. He watched all the reviews for this on Youtube, read all the reviews online for this and he was sold. I think this was for sale in the US in July of this year? Don't quote me on that. : ) But it was released here in Japan September 25, 2012. As soon as it came out in Japan, Noboru ordered it right away. He waited a week and it finally got here last Sunday or Monday. He loves it! The newest Transformers came with it automatically, Noah loves that of course since he's a Transformers fan. Noboru has been reading books on there and everything.

Branden and Noah's obento for last Tuesday.  Branden's obento is the hamburger obento at the back and Noah's obento is the whole Spongebob cast, Squidward, Patrick, Spongebob and Mr. Crabs. Aha and I see Gary in there too. You see, they were supposed to have "town undokai" on Sunday *however* since it was canceled due to rain. They had to go to school Tuesday. If they were to have undokai as planned then Tuesday would have been an off from school day. Which is why the lunch ladies were given the day off. However since "town undokai" was canceled, they all had school Tuesday after all and since the lunch ladies had the day off, our whole town had to make obento for Tuesday. : ) Which is totally fine. After making obento so many years, it's second nature at this point. I kept it pretty simple to be honest, toasted pepperoni and mozzarella cheese sandwich on a bakery baguette with lettuce. Steamed broccoli, french fries, diced apples and homemade chocolate chip pecan cookies. Notice the Halloween sticks I used. lol. Halloween pumpkin stick for the apples and Halloween ghost with witch's hat for the fries. Noah said the Yuka-sensei took a picture of his lunch after saying how cool it was @_@  Gee, I hope it doesn't wind up on the wall in his class. @_@.  And to be fair, I'm pretty sure, this lunch wouldn't raise an eyebrow in the US (meaning we all bake Toll house in America and we're all very good sandwich makers also, lol).  But anyway, yeah Noah said his class ran over to peek inside and all thought his lunch was super cool and they noticed his Halloween sticks also. Branden said, Saya-chan said, "omg, homemade cookies!" lol. He gave her one. And he also gave one to his best friend Yuki. Which is good because, I mentioned they should share the cookies with friends.  Branden and Noah are always happy on the days they can bring a lunch from home.

Wednesday I went and took 2 loads of blankets to the laundry mat. Load on the right is every blanket, sheet and pillow case from Noboru's and my bed. The load on the left is every fleece blanket we own for the house. Every fleece blanket we use for the couch, our bed or for the boys rooms. I wanted to get them all clean and ready for when and if it starts to get chilly, still too warm at night to use them for bed still. But good to know they are ready and freshly clean for when it gets chilly.

While the laundry was in the washer at the laundry mat, I ran to the grocery store did a few days of shopping and then came around back to the laundry mat... threw the blankets and fleece blankets in the dryer. And went to sit in my car while the 2 bags of groceries were in the front seat area. The back seat of my little red car was flat and the back seats were down to be able to hold the blankets. Once they were dry in about 15 minutes, I threw the hot blankets into the back of my little red car and drove home. Knocking out the blanket washing and grocery shopping in one trip. Came home, put the 2 bags of food away and then quickly went upstairs made my bed and folded the fleece blankets, vacuumed under the couch cushions which is what's in this picture and then put the couch back together and placed 2 fleece blankets on the couch so the boys can snuggle up on the couch in the evenings now and 1 fleece blanket I folded nicely and put on the bottom of Noah's bed in Noah's room and the other I placed on the bottom of Branden's bed in his room and I folded the big fleece blanket and folded it and put it on the bottom of Noboru's and my bed. After that, I swooshed toilets for like the billionth time in my life, ha ha ha. : ) And called it a day. Did prep dinner of course and did pick up the boys of course too from school. : )

Thursday afternoon my husband took me on a date.  We went to Coco Ichi Curry. Last year between September or October and went until the end of November they sold chicken tenderloin cutlet curry. It was delicious we went there about 5 times between that time frame.  This year when we drove past  Coco Ichi we checked to see if they were doing the same thing this year also and sure enough, they were.  We have gone once so far with the boys. Right when this started. And then the night of the undokai when Noboru went to the Father's Club party, I went through the Coco Ichi drive thru lol. And ordered 2  regular size chicken tender cutlet curry's and 1 half size for Noah. And then this date last Thursday Noboru took me on. So I've been to Coco Ichi 3 times so far for the delicious chicken tender cutlet curry. It goes until the end of November so I'll try and get there a few more times too.  But anyway, that's where Noboru and I went this Thursday, 2 days ago or whatever. ; )

Friday/yesterday found me giving the house a seriously serious deep cleaning.  Mopping the floor, toilet scrubbing (as usual) tub and shower room cleaning though I mostly do this at night before my shower, cleaned out the food pantry, went through the fridge looking for old or expired stuff. Vacuumed the house, dusted the house. I had a full load in the dryer, underwear for everyone, socks, tops and t shirts, long sleeves and sweatpants of every ones and jammie/pj type stuff. And a whole load of towels outside drying which is pictured. I also managed to do 30 minute on the treadmill. And prepped for the nabe in the daytime. I usually get an hour of rest in the day time to watch TV, surf online, but yesterday I really kept busy and didn't have my free time. At 3pm, swung and picked up Noah. At 3:45pm went back and picked up Branden and we quickly drove to swimming school. Noah swam for an hour and a half and then we came home. Noboru came home almost same time as us and we all by then were done for the day!!!! Time for the weekend to begin. Time for me to relax and unwind. The boys to relax and unwind. Noboru's days off are different so his weekends don't necessarily fall on an actual weekend. But....yeah we are all glad the weekend is here. 

Thanksgiving turkey. We ordered our Thanksgiving turkey last week of September. Thanksgiving isn't until November but, Noboru checked the place online we usually order our turkey from and was surprised that all the smaller sizes of turkey were already sold out! @_@ Granted we usually get a 20 pounder. And it was still available but Noboru said..."what if it does become sold out, then what will we do?" Sure we could drive all the way to Costco Makuhari *but* that really is a far as heck drive for us...think about Disneyland/Sea for us. @_@ And I agreed. I said "you know what....you're right." So we ordered our Thanksgiving turkey last week of September, we picked the Sunday before Thanksgiving for our delivery date preference. So at least we can go phew...no need to worry. We know now it will come for us. So relief. and I keep wanting to mention this...and I keep forgetting. : )

And finally and I really debated mentioning this on here but....have any of you been keeping up with the story on the little 10 year old girl abducted in Westminster Colorado?  I'm from Colorado, I think that's no real surprise or shocker here. : ) And I have a soft spot in my heart for anything and everything Colorado related. Last week it was a blurb on yahoo news that said "Missing 10 year old girl from Westminster, Colorado." It immediately stunned me and I double clicked the article. The short story of it, a 10 year old little girl was on her way to walk to school, she usually meets her friends down the road and they walk to school together. Safety in numbers and all that you know. Anyway, she never met her friends and she never made it to school. This story bothered me to my core because #1, my oldest son is 10 years old. Sure they're 10, but they're still just kids! My god, if I were living in Colorado she could essentially have been Branden's classmate for crying out loud! It really struck a nerve in me right away. I found myself looking for updates on the girl. Please say she just ran away I thought. Though I doubted it. Please say she's found safe and sound. Colorado folks jumped in and conducted a massive search. And then her backpack and water bottle was found in Arvada, which is very close to Westminster, they are side by side to each other. When her little backpack and water bottle was found on a street, I got a very bad feeling and a pit in my stomach. It didn't look good at this point. I watched via online her parents pleading for her safe return. And I prayed for her safe return myself.  And then...a body was found in Arvada. They said..."not intact" as in dismembered. My god say it's not this girl. Though common sense makes you think well, who else would it be then? And yes this morning when I woke up...it was her. Do you have any idea how close I grew up near this area?  When I went to any movie with my friends, we went to see it at the Westminster Mall or the movie theater in Arvada they were just closest to where we lived. When Branden or Noah would get stuff from Babies r us... our closest location to my family home was the Babies R Us in Westminster. And when they mentioned the park on yahoo news my heart dropped because I know it so well, I could drive there with my eyes closed. I know this area. Arvada and Westminster is a nice quiet suburb area... family area, I mean...you'd never imagine it happening there, if that makes sense at all, yet it did. So, yeah this was just all too close for comfort for me. And it bothered me all this week. And this morning when I read Yahoo and read it was indeed Jessica. *sigh* Just really really upsetting. My sincerest condolences to her family. 10 years old is just way too young to die and I still can't make sense of this. I hope they catch the monster who did this and....well I won't say on here what I hope happens to him.  I will be keeping my eyes on this case online. I hope they catch that son of a sucker! That predator. Hurter of children! Okay...I will not end this on a sad note. And I do apologize if I bummed anyone out. It's just kids are innocent you know. Still thinking.  Oh, I thought of something I can throw in here to end this on a less sad note. Ordered Branden 2 other pair of pants from a Japanese company online, 1 tan cargo pants and 1 pair of jeans, they got here already too. So now he officially has 5 pair. (4 jeans and 1 pants) So he's set there. Now all the boys need now are sweatshirts. So almost done with getting ready for the cooler weather.
